Where do Russian gangsters get their money from?

I'm constantly hearing of Russian billionaires who have stolen their money from the state but how exactly does this work?
I understand that when communism fell some blokes basically just strong armed their way into power companies, mining coorporatuons etc and took over the business (funny enough I know a famous dj who started his dj career in basically the same way).
But how else is it happening? Are gangsters getting a cut of taxes etc? I don't see how 25 years after the ussr fell they are still able to steal from the state

Yep asset stripped the natural resources. I as I understand many of them didn't even have the money needed but borrowed heavily from western banks> Of course those fortunate to tender at a remarkably reasonable price must have had some 'leverage'.
Russian officials getting large bungs and offers they couldn't refuse.
That's it in a nutshell.

The original statement in the OP is that they stole their money FROM the state.
The state ARE the gangsters and the others are just the front for a massive redistribution of wealth amongst a chosen few. Russia is nothing more than a banana republic run by Putin and his cronies

Agree McMafia is good.......skillfull adaption of a non fiction work. However for a real horror show, you need to read the book.

Upon the fall of Soviet communism state owned assets (i.e. all assets) were effectively distributed between the top party apparatchiks. It was state theft on an industrial scale engineered through bribery, corruption and brute force brute force. This led to the mafia state that Russia is today. Basically a handful of Russians stole Russia.

A billion dollars simply disappeared from the Russian space program, for example. When you control the government and there’s little or no free press, it’s easy to steal money.

In the move from communism when the Russian state owned everything, to the free market, most of the assets of the states were handed out to the powerful former communist officials.
It became a bit of a game of thrones in the years after that where the most ruthless rose to the top.
Putin came in and basically came in and restored order, to a degree, where he left most of them alone if they didn’t try to take political power and instead focused on making money.
So in addition to the normal graft and such they are also given access to the nations assets. To extract oil or Nat gas, build government projects, fill government orders, all of which come at massive profit to them at the expense of the Russian people.
